In Part 61 programs, there are no certification procedures for each course of training and instead can be completed in a sequence designated by either a flight instructor or flight school.
To earn an Instrument Pilot License single-engine rating, the student:
1. FAR 61.129(a) – 250 hours of flight time as a pilot.
2. FAR 61.129(a)(1) – 100 hours in powered aircraft.
3. FAR 61.129(a)(1) – 50 hours in an airplane.
4. FAR 61.129(a)(2) – 100 hours PIC time
5. FAR 61.129(a)(2)(ii) – 50 hours PIC in cross-country flight.
6. FAR 61.129(a)(2)(ii) – 10 hours PIC in cross-country flight in an airplane.
7. FAR 61.129(a)(3) – 20 hours of flight training.
8. FAR 61.29(a)(3)(i) – 10 hours of simulated IFR training
9. FAR 61.129(a)(3)(i) – 5 hours of simulated IFR training in a single-engine airplane.
10. FAR 61.129(a)(3)(ii) – 10 hours of training in a complex (or turbine, or TAA) airplane.
11. FAR 61.129(a)(3)(iv) – A 2-hour night cross-country training flight in a single-engine airplane with a total distance (straight line) over 100NM from the point of departure.
12. FAR 61.129(a)(3)(v) – 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane within 2 calendar months prior to the test.
13. FAR 61.129(a)(4) – 10 hours of solo time in a single-engine airplane.
14. FAR 61.129(a)(4)(i) – A solo cross-country flight in a single-engine airplane of not less than 300NM total distance, with 3 landings, at least one of which is 250NM away from the departure point (straight line).
15. FAR 61.129(a)(4)(ii) – 5 hours solo in night VFR conditions in a single-engine airplane.
16. FAR 61.129(a)(4)(ii) – 10 solo takeoffs at night in a single-engine airplane.
17. FAR 61.129(a)(4)(ii) – 10 solo landings at night in a single-engine airplane (flight in the traffic pattern and a control tower are assumed)
In contrast to Part 61, a flight school that is Part 141 approved means that not only does the school meet the FAA requirements, but the course has been specifically approved. The result is that some of the aeronautical experience requirements can be reduced although it’s not always the case. To meet the minimum requirements under Part 141 for Commercial rating, the student:
1. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(a)(1) – 120 hours of flight training
2. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1) – 55 hours of flight training from a CFI<
3. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(i) – 10 hours of instrument training
4. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(i) – 5 hours of instrument training in a single-engine airplane
5. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(ii) – 10 hours of training in a single-engine airplane that is complex or turbine-powered.
6. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(iii) – One cross-country flight in daytime conditions that is at least 2 hours and goes at least 100NM from the point of
7. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(iv) – One cross-country flight in nighttime conditions that is at least 2 hours and goes at least 100NM from the point of departure.
8. Part 141 Appendix D, 4(b)(1)(v) – 3 hours of test prep in a single-engine airplane within 60 days preceding the test.
9. Part 141 Appendix D, 5(a) – 10 hours of solo time (or duties-of-PIC with an authorized Instructor on board) in a single-engine airplane
10. Part 141 Appendix D, 5(a)(1) or (2) – One solo (or duties-of-PIC with an authorized instructor on board) cross-country flight with at least 3 landings and a segment with a straight-line distance of at least 250NM
11. Part 141 Appendix D, 5(a)(3) – 5 hours of solo (or duties-of-PIC with an authorized instructor on board) flight in night VFR conditions
12. Part 141 Appendix D, 5(a)(3) – 10 solo takeoffs at night (VFR conditions)
13. Part 141 Appendix D, 5(a)(3) – 10 solo landings at night (VFR conditions)
